Yikes. Well, if No Doubt wanted to announce their return to the world with authority, this was…one way to do it. The cover art for upcoming ND single “Settle Down”—their first in nearly a decade—is very much an attention-grabber as it is easily the worst thing we’ve seen this year, garish for so many reasons and appropriate for none. Let’s break down the myriad weirdnesses:
- First and foremost, No Doubt’s resident media editor must really have been craving bananas at the time of tinting, as the entire thing is awash in this overbearingly bright green-yellow that makes Tony Kanal look like his legs of been burned off by some sort of nuclear waste. It’s like neon’s much-less-impressive younger brother and it is perplexing why No Doubt thought it would look cool.
- The entire band looks Photoshopped in, especially Tony Dumont, who doesn’t even seem to realize there’s a photograph going on.
- Adrian Young appears terrified of the song title.
- The background is re-colored to the point of losing all sense of distance and shape—so much so that it’s not even easy to tell where the band is. Though maybe those are horn instruments of some sort behind Tony Kanal’s head? Did they take a shot in the studio and just doctor the photo to make it less obvious that the band couldn’t be assed to move to another location for their single cover?
- The text font looks like something better suited for an Atari Teenage Riot album cover.
We were excited for the new No Doubt single…and we still are, probably. But if it sounds like this cover looks, we might not be able to get through a full listen without becoming physically ill.
