Info Post

Remember Walk Off the Earth? They parlayed some viral video success into a iTunes hit and even an appearance on Ellen with their cover of Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” which was notable for being played by all five members of the band on one guitar—some strumming, some drumming, some fretting, etc. Well the Piano Boys have taken the five-on-one cover of a hit song concept for their own, but, true to their name of course, they have traded out Walk Off the Earth’s guitar for a piano. (Which when you think about it, makes a lot more sense—y’know, bigger instrument. A lot easier to fit five guys around it.)

Novelty aside, it’s actually a much richer cover than the Walk Off the Earth version—that one was more “How are they doing this??” than “Wow, what a great artistic reinterpretation,” and in fact sounded a whole lot like the original. But this one takes the pop surge of the original and goes entirely instrumental with it, somehow maintaining the energy and catchiness of the original in the process. The enthusiasm of the group themselves certainly helps: For some grown-ass men with considerable musical talent, they sure love themselves some One Direction. Nothing wrong with that. Here’s hoping Ellen calls sooner rather than later.
